 Tecate is located on the U.S.A.-Mexico border just a few miles inland from the Pacific Ocean in the Mexican State of Baja California. The city is located in a pleasant valley in the lower Sierra Juarez mountains, at an altitude of 1,650 feet. The city has a population of approximately 100,000 people. Its history dates from October 12, 1892, when the city was designated the Agricultural Colony of Tecate. Tecate is famous for its wine and beer industries. In addition, the fresh air native to the valley was instrumental in luring the developers of North America's first and longest operating health spa, the Rancho La Puerta. Visits to Tecate can include a tour of the Tecate Brewery where its namesake cerveza has been brewed for over fifty years, and of course to Rancho La Puerta where many days of relaxation can be had. The nearby El Vallecito Archaeological Site is famous for its collection of ancient art, petroglyphs, and cave paintings.
