Gilroy Sister Cities Association
Situated in the southwest region of France, Saint-Clar lies in the Gers Departement, north of Gascony. The city was originally a fortified village containing two city squares, both with arcades. These are Place de la Mairie, with its picturesque 13th century covered market hall; and Place de la Republique, near to which is the neo-gothic Church of Saint Clair. Noted for its outstanding local architecture and the beauty of the surrounding countryside, Saint-Clar is a major tourist destination. Garlic cultivation is a major industry in the area. Indeed, Saint-Clar is known as the Capitale de l'Ail Blanc, the Garlic Capital of France. Saint-Clar became a Sister City with Gilroy in 1985, one of our two original Sister Cities.
