Tecate, Mexico, is located on the U.S.-Mexico border east of San Diego, CA and Tijuana, Mexico. The city is situated in a bowl-shaped valley in the lower Sierra Juarez Mountains, also known as the Laguna Mountains on the California side.

Tecate is at an altitude of 1,650 feet which allows for a pleasant climate for the population of approximately 100,000 people. Its foundation dates from October 12, 1892, appearing for the first time on the record books at the Mission of San Diego when it was constituted as the Agricultural Colony of Tecate.

Tecate is famous for its wine and beer industries. The fresh air in the valley lured the develpoers of North America’s first and longest-running health spa, Rancho La Puerta. Visits to Tecate can  include a tour of the local Tecate Brewery where its namesake cerveza has been brewed for nearly 50 years; Rancho La Puerta where you can enjoy a day or more of relaxation; and the El Vallecito Museum, famous for its art and native cave paintings.

Tecate became a Sister City to Gilroy on October 23, 1996, and has sent delegates to the Gilroy Carlic Festival on several occasions, most recently in 2008.
